Gardens are full of life, much of it invisible to the naked eye. Plenty of this bacterial life is beneficial to the health of the garden but some can cause serious health problems in humans. - Tetanus. Commonly known as 'lockjaw', tetanus is caused by exposure to clostridium tetani bacteria, which is found in soil and manure. The bacteria can enter the body through even the most minute cuts and grazes, causing a range of unpleasant symptoms including weakness, stiffness and severe cramps. Left untreated, tetanus infections can prove fatal.
- Sepsis. A whole host of bacteria can cause sepsis: E.coli, salmonella, campylobacter and listeria are among the most well-known. The rapid growth of these bacteria in the bloodstream causes the body to produce an inflammatory response that leads to septic shock, failure of major organs and, ultimately, death.
- Legionellosis. Legionella pneumophila bacteria is what causes legionnaires' disease. Though the bacteria is most often associated with contaminated plumbing and air-conditioning systems, the fact is that it can be found in any standing pool of water in a garden. Symptoms include shortage of breath, nausea, fever and muscular pain: around 1 in 10 people who contract legionnaires' disease die as a result.
