Food Tastes Better with Stainless
Stainless steel is used all over the globe for its strength and corrosion-resistant properties, and it is used in a wide range of industries such as construction, automotive, and the medical industry. However, stainless steel is also used extensively in the food and kitchenware industry, but why? Outlined below, we discuss the key benefits of utilising stainless steel in this sector and why many food companies prefer to use this metal.
Hygienic
One of the primary reasons why stainless steel is used in the food industry is because of its hygienic advantage. Stainless steel has become one of the most popular metals in this industry, as it is one of the safest surfaces in the world that can be easily sanitised. The cleanability of stainless steel allows bacteria and microorganisms to be removed effectively, with just a simple wipe. Studies show that stainless steel has a very low bacterial retention capacity, making it incredibly suitable for food preparation and production.
Corrosion-Resistant
Just like many other industries, stainless steel is used in the food industry for its corrosion-resistance. Food equipment and utensils are constantly exposed to water, acidic foods, and cleaning chemicals, and therefore need to be made from a material that can withstand all of these elements. Many stainless steel alloys such as 304 and 316 are highly resistant to water and chemicals and will not corrode or break down with continuous use. The durability of the metal against corrosion also means stainless steel is neutral to food items, meaning it does not affect the flavour or smell of any food or drink products, which is an important feature for the food industry.
Heat-Resistant
Stainless steel can withstand extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) and pressures, without altering or warping in any way. Particularly in food production and transportation where heavy machinery is used, its heat-resistant property is very beneficial, as it holds its shape and is less susceptible to damage. Cooking utensils and equipment are also generally made from stainless steel, to withstand temperatures on kitchen appliances such as a stove.
Easy Fabrication
There are numerous ways in which stainless steel can be fabricated, for example, it can be cut, welded, and formed into any shape. With these current modern metal-working techniques, stainless steel can be used to make small tools including knives, food mixers, pots, and pans, as well as larger appliances such as industrial ovens.
Sustainability
Stainless steel is a 100% recyclable material and is popular amongst many companies within the food industry for this reason. Its recyclable quality, along with its long-term durability and strength, means stainless steel is excellent value for money. Plus, the minimal waste allows companies to aim for a greener future if that is one of their main goals.
