Keep Your Roof Clean with Copper Wire!
As we approach the chilly months of late November in the UK, it is important to ensure that your homes and buildings are well-maintained and ready for the season. A key part of this is taking care of your roof, the main barrier against the winter elements. At BS Fixings, we understand the importance of a clean roof, which is why we are going to explore this innovative solution – copper wire for roof maintenance.
The Problem with Moss and Lichen
Moss and lichen tend to flourish in damp, shady conditions, often found on north-facing or shallow roofs in the UK. Whilst a small amount of these growths isn’t harmful, substantial accumulation can obstruct water flow, retaining moisture and potentially causing leaks or damage to your property. This not only affects the structural integrity of your roof but also reduces its lifespan and affects its aesthetic appeal.
Why Use Copper Wire?
Copper wire is an efficient and eco-friendly solution to prevent moss growth on roofs. Installing copper wire across the roof at intervals creates a barrier against moss. When it rains, the reaction between the copper and water produces a residue that inhibits moss growth. As copper is one of the 3rd most recycled metals in the world, this solution also adds an element of sustainability to your roofing solution.
For effective moss prevention, you can install copper wire strips across the ridge of your roof, close to the pitch. In the case of larger roofs, you might need an additional strip midway down the roof. As rainwater flows over the copper wire, it washes down copper salts, coating the roof and preventing moss and algae growth.
Additional Tips:
- Trim overhanging trees – as moss and lichen thrive in shaded locations, you can reduce shade and moisture retention on your roof by cutting back overhanging branches, allowing more sunlight to reach your roof.
- Regular cleaning – whilst cleaning your roof might be the last priority on your to-do list, it can help reduce the risk of damage caused by moss growth. Try to keep your roof clear of leaves, twigs, and debris to create a less hospitable environment for moss.
A well-maintained roof is essential for the longevity and health of your home or commercial property, especially in the wet and cold UK climate. Copper wire offers an effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly solution to keep your roof moss and lichen-free. At BS Fixings, we provide high-quality copper wire products, that are suitable for a range of uses including electronics, plumbing, arts, automotive, roofing, and more!
