Installation

The SDS driver tools deliver repetitive lightweight hammer impacts to the tie end. The impacts drive the tie into the masonry, via the pilot holes. The helix shape and it's larger size causes the tie to self-rotate as it ‘corkscrews’ into the masonry.

The pilot holes for all helical ties depend on the hardness of the masonry.

The manufacturers have tested for UKCA/CE marking using 6mm holes, which are usually OK for medium strength brickwork and blockwork. If tying into hard concrete or semi engineering bricks then a 6.5mm hole may be necessary to ease installation. On the other hand, if the bricks are extremely soft or are perforated, a carefully drilled 5mm hole may be preferable to achieve maximum hold.
