The BS Fixings team is very proud to announce our brand new range of taps and dies from Völkel, designed to help you achieve your DIY and building goals with ease! Völkel is a world-leading manufacturer of threading tools and products, and we are thrilled to now stock their products on our website for you to purchase. We strive to provide our customers with top-of-the-range products at the best trade prices, to ensure you can complete your jobs successfully without going over budget.

Whether you’re a mechanic, metalworker, or someone that loves to tinker around in your garage, taps and dies are essential tools to have in your toolkit – you might just not know it yet! They are clever little tools that can help you create or re-thread a screw, bolt, or nut.

Taps are used to cut thread into holes, whilst dies are used to cut threads onto bolts and other cylindrical objects. For example, the shank of a screw is threaded, whilst nuts are tapped, it is as simple as that. Without the right taps and dies, it can be difficult to get the precision and accuracy you need for your projects, especially if you need to repair your fixings’ damaged threads.

On our website, we now stock Völkel Presto 6000 series metric coarse 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cut straight flute hand taps:

1st cut – taper tap

The 1st/taper hand tap has 8-10 tapered threads, which are positioned at a 60° angle. The positioning and angle of the threads ensure a clean and accurate finish every time, making this 1st cut hand tap suitable for hard materials and small projects.

2nd cut – second tap

The 2nd cut tap also has threads positioned at a 60° angle, however, there are only 3-5 tapered threads. This type of tap is the most widely used, as it is suitable for a range of projects whether you’re tapping steel or non-ferrous materials.

3rd cut – bottoming/plug tap

The 3rd/plug tap is designed without a tapered end, unlike the 1st and 2nd cuts. Instead, 3rd cut taps have a continuous cutting edge with only a 1-2 chamfer lead. Due to its short, tapered end, this type of tap cannot be used for an unthreaded hole, either a tapered or second tap will have to start the process.

All of the Völkel hand taps we stock are manufactured out of HSS-ground steel (high-speed steel) which has fantastic impact resistance and can withstand high temperatures. They also have an uncoated bright finish, which prevents the metal filings from adhering to and clogging up the tap flutes, making them easy to use and maintain. Each tap is available in several standard sizes to fulfil your project’s requirements.
