How Dangerous is Damp?
Some people who do not know about the effects of dampness may see it as just an inconvenience, like weeds growing in the garden, however, there is much more to damp than we may assume.
Damp is actually really bad for you, especially if you have pre-existing lung problems. Damp is known to worsen a person’s breathing quality, so if you have a pre-existing lung condition such as asthma or COPD, you may find the symptoms of such conditions actually increase. With that being said, it is not only those with pre-existing conditions it can affect, if you were to catch COVID-19 and inhabit the same space as damp in the home you could feel its effects harder due to both of the attacks on your breathing working in tandem.
Speaking more intrinsically, inhaling fragments or spores of damp can make your airways inflamed, cause wheezing, nasal congestion, irritation of the throat, tightness of the chest, and coughing. If the exposure to dampness is for an extended amount of time, it can affect your immune system and introduce health conditions such as asthma into your life.
Not only is damp bad for your health but it can also be detrimental to your house’s infrastructure. Dampness can develop wood-rotting fungi such as dry rot and wet rot. If this is then left, then it can also worsen problems such as timber decay. Not only this, but aesthetically, it isn’t something anyone would want to see when trying to relax or having friends over for dinner.
Do not fret! Damp is preventable, maintaining your peace of mind and level of contentment in your home. Here at BS Fixings, we recommend our popular product “Damp Proof Course” which boasts effective action against dampness being a problem for the state of your family and your home. It works by protecting against moisture that defies gravity and rises from the ground, providing a protective layer to stop it in its tracks.
Some common causes of said dampness are condensation issues, external flooding, plumbing leaks and defective drains, so if you do find damp in your home it is for the best to get a specialist to diagnose your problem, as a misdiagnosis will just cost you more money than you need to spend. Once the damp has been removed, see the damp proof course as a permanent remedy for your home’s infrastructure and you shouldn’t need to face the problem again!
