Know your Fixings: Set Bolts VS Set Screws
Making sure you have the right tools for the job is essential before you start work; it will save you time and money (and a lot of frustration!). There are crucial differences between stainless steel fixings and fastenings that must be understood and one of these is the difference between set bolts and screws. With our quick guide below, you can’t go wrong.
The confusion between bolts and screws comes from their great similarities in appearance; both are extremely useful components and are standard pieces of kit for most construction and renovation workers. There are differences, however, and they are quite easy to spot when you know what you are looking for.
Set Screws
The major visible difference between these and set bolts is that they are fully threaded, allowing the entire length of the screw to be fully inserted into the object in question.
Set screws are most commonly used for attaching two materials together; they work best when used on wood but are also often used on metal, plastic and other ordinary construction materials. They are particularly versatile and this ensures their consistent popularity in the toolbox.
Set Bolts
You will notice that bolts only feature partial threading, leaving a gap between the bolt’s head and the end of the threading; just to add to the confusion, this space can sometimes be so small as to be practically invisible with bolts below a certain specific length! Bolts are designed to secure materials by fitting matching nuts, which therefore creates a fastening system to attach and/or tighten two materials together.
