Frame Cramp Wall Ties

What Are Frame Cramp Wall Ties?

  • Frame cramp wall ties, also known as frame cramps, are specialized fixings used in construction to connect masonry panels, such as brick or block walls, to adjacent structural elements like concrete frames, steelwork, or internal blockwork.
  • Unlike standard cavity wall ties that link two masonry leaves, frame cramps connect masonry to dissimilar structural materials.

Characteristics of Frame Cramp Wall Ties

  • Profile: Typically L-shaped or similarly bent, with one end featuring a flat or holed/slotted upstand for mechanical fixing to the structural frame and the other end embedding into the masonry’s mortar joint.
  • Materials: Made from corrosion-resistant materials, usually stainless steel, or occasionally galvanized steel, to prevent rust in moisture-prone environments like wall cavities.
  • Design Variations: Holed or slotted upstands for fixed or adjustable connections. Some include a drip feature to prevent moisture transfer across cavities.
Safety ends on the mortar joint end for better bonding and to avoid sharp edges.
  • Function: Provide lateral restraint to prevent masonry walls from moving sideways, bowing, or separating due to wind pressure or differential movement. Slotted designs allow controlled vertical or horizontal movement to accommodate thermal expansion, contraction, or building settlement.

Uses of Frame Cramp Wall Ties

Frame cramp wall ties are used in the following construction applications:

  • Connecting masonry infill panels to concrete columns or beams in framed structures.
  • Tying masonry walls to steelwork, such as steel columns or beams.
  • Securing internal blockwork to a primary structural frame.
  • Tying existing masonry to new structural frames during renovations or extensions.
  • Reinforcing masonry around door and window openings to secure it to the main structure.

Purpose of Frame Cramp Wall Ties

Frame cramp wall ties ensure structural stability by securing masonry to rigid structural elements, preventing lateral movement while allowing for differential movement between materials. They maintain the integrity of the building by accommodating stresses from environmental factors or material differences.
