Solar panels can provide a sheltered and secure space for pigeons and other birds to nest. Once birds gain access beneath a solar array, nesting materials, feathers and droppings can begin to build up, creating mess, noise and ongoing maintenance problems.

A practical way to help prevent this is to install solar panel bird-proofing mesh around the perimeter of the array.

Our new PVC-coated solar panel mesh and black speed clips provide a discreet, non-penetrating system that helps stop birds from accessing the space beneath solar panels without drilling into the panel frame.

Why Do Birds Nest Beneath Solar Panels?

The gap between a solar panel and the roof provides shelter from wind, rain and predators. This makes it an attractive nesting area, particularly for pigeons.

Over time, birds nesting beneath solar panels can lead to:

  • A build-up of nesting material and debris

  • Bird droppings around the roof and property

  • Increased noise

  • Restricted access for cleaning and maintenance

  • Disturbance around cables and other components

Installing mesh around the outer edge of the solar array creates a physical barrier while still allowing air to circulate beneath the panels.

PVC-Coated Solar Panel Bird Mesh

Our black PVC-coated solar panel mesh is supplied in a 200mm x 30m roll and is designed to cover the gap between the edge of the solar panel and the roof.

The black finish provides a discreet appearance that blends with most solar panel frames, while the mesh can be cut or folded to suit different roof profiles.

Key Benefits

  • Helps prevent pigeons and other birds from nesting beneath solar panels

  • Durable black PVC-coated finish

  • Supplied in a 200mm x 30m roll

  • Can be trimmed or folded to suit the installation

  • Allows ventilation beneath the solar array

  • Suitable for use with compatible solar panel speed clips

  • No drilling or adhesive required when fitted with the correct clips

Black Solar Panel Speed Clips

The mesh is secured using black solar panel speed clips, which attach directly to the front edge of the solar panel frame.

The clips pass through the mesh apertures and fit over the panel frame, holding the mesh securely in place without penetrating the frame.

They are available in:

  • 30mm

  • 35mm

  • 40mm

The correct size should be selected by measuring the depth of the solar panel frame before ordering. Because the clips are removable, sections of mesh can be taken down when access is needed for cleaning, inspection or maintenance.

How Many Clips Are Required?

The installation guide recommends fitting speed clips approximately every 200mm, which works out at around five to six clips per metre.

As a general guide:

  • 10m perimeter: approximately 50 to 60 clips

  • 15m perimeter: approximately 75 to 90 clips

  • 20m perimeter: approximately 100 to 120 clips

  • 25m perimeter: approximately 125 to 150 clips

  • 30m perimeter: approximately 150 to 180 clips

When calculating how much mesh is required, it is also recommended to allow an additional 1 to 2 metres for corners, joints and overlaps.

Basic Installation Guidance

Before installation, measure the full perimeter of the solar array and the depth of the panel frame.

For easier handling, the mesh can be cut into shorter sections of approximately 1m to 1.5m. Hold the mesh against the edge of the panel, pass the speed clip through the mesh and secure it over the panel frame.

Where two mesh sections meet, overlap them by three apertures and secure the joint. Stainless steel ties can also be used to strengthen the connection between mesh sections. The mesh should be fitted closely around internal and external corners without leaving gaps.

A Simple Way to Protect Solar Panels

Solar panel bird mesh provides a straightforward way to help prevent nesting birds from getting underneath solar arrays.

By combining durable PVC-coated mesh with removable black speed clips, installers can create a secure and discreet barrier without drilling into the solar panel frame.
